Tips to make the most of holiday road trips with kids

Holidays and long weekends have often been associated with mini-vacations and getaways, and it has become more of a tradition or ritual for most of us. Holidays are the best time to spend time with your family and reconnect with them, which we often forget to do due to leading such hectic schedules. A lot of us use holidays as an excuse to go on vacations, and we personally think that there’s no better way to spend time together as a family than going on a holiday road trip, sounds fun right? However, family road trips can often be stressful, especially when you are traveling with kids. Since kids get bored very easily, you need to come mentally prepared for everything that can go wrong during the trip, and one or both of the kids end up throwing tantrums for some reason. To help you ensure that the whole ride will be really smooth and hassle-free, we have jotted down a list of some tips for you that will help you survive the holiday road trip with kids.

Make lists of everything

Road trips can be fun but quite stressful at the same time. Much like any other trip, road trips also require proper planning, and in order to save yourself from stress, you can make lists of everything to keep everything organized. You can start by making a list of things that you need to do before leaving or after arriving at the destination. Similarly, you can make lists of every single thing that might help to alleviate stress and make your trip more hassle-free such as a packing list, holiday check-in information, etc.

Create an itinerary in advance

Creating an itinerary in advance is one of the best things you can do to ensure a smooth journey. No matter if you are traveling through that route for the very first time or are familiar with it, it’s always best to plan the routine in advance. You can check the routes on the internet, and then based on your preferences and likings; you can select the route that meets your requirements in the best possible way. You can also involve your kids while planning the routine to make it a family activity.

Bring snacks

Whether it’s an hour-long trip or a really long one, the kids will constantly be complaining of feeling hungry, hence, it’s wise to pack some snacks for the trip. While fast food might seem an easy and inexpensive option, you should also consider carrying a couple of healthy snacks as fast food can make you feel lethargic or sick. Additionally, if the road trip is going to last for hours, then you can bring a cooler packed with picnic supplies. Fruits, crackers, vegetables and hummus, etc. are some of the best foods to keep your energy levels high through the trip.

Keep taking frequent breaks

Don’t turn your family road trip all about just reaching the destination, where’s fun in that? This will only make your trip feel rushed, which can add to the stress. When you have a chance to make this road trip a really fun and wholesome experience, why not utilize it? Therefore, keep taking frequent breaks while you are on the road. You can make stops at attractions, parks, restrooms, etc. to freshen up yourself and to also make your kids even happier.

Keep essentials handy

If you are traveling with babies or even toddlers, you might want to keep the essentials nearby. Placing them in the trunk will be super inconvenient as whenever you are in need of something important, you will have to make quick stops every single time to get that thing. Therefore, keep essentials like wet wipes, electronics chargers, an extra set of clothes, and snacks nearby.
